Halloween is a time when a lot of people watch scary movies or put up terrifying decorations. But if you want to see something that’s truly worth being afraid of, your dentist has a few statistics to share with you. Below are some frightening facts about oral health that all dental patients should know – as well as a few tips for keeping your own smile safe.

Dental Health Statistics You Should Be Aware Of

Oral health issues such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss are all too common, but exactly how widespread are they? Here’s what statistics say:

  • Over 90% of adults above the age of 20 have had a cavity at some point in their lives.
  • More than a quarter (roughly 27%) of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 are currently struggling with cavities that have not been treated.
  • Nearly half of all adults over the age of 30 have gum disease in one form or another.
  • Gum disease is particularly common among seniors, with about 70% of people over the age of 65 suffering from it.
  • Some researchers have found that about 178 million Americans have lost at least one tooth, and around 40 million no longer have any teeth.
  • More than 38% of adults between the ages of 18 and 64 have not been to the dentist at all in the last 12 months.

How Can You Protect Your Smile?

The good news is that many dental issues are preventable. If you don’t want to become an oral health statistic, you should take the initiative in keeping your teeth and gums safe. Here are some tips that can help ensure that your smile stays in good shape:

  • Brush at Least Two Times a Day: You’re probably already well aware of how important brushing twice a day is for minimizing your risk for cavities. It’s important to be thorough, so make sure that each brushing session lasts for two minutes.
  • Floss at Least Once a Day: If you’re worried about the health of your gums, you need to make flossing a daily part of your oral hygiene routine as soon as possible. In the event that you’re having trouble using traditional string floss, you may want to look into alternatives such as interdental brushes or water flossers.
  • Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months: Seeing your dentist twice a year can improve your chances of having dental issues treated as promptly as possible.

It’s important to be fully informed when it comes to oral health. Learning the latest statistics and brushing up on the correct dental hygiene habits can go a long way toward helping you avoid problems with your smile.
