Dentures restore your ability to chew, speak, and smile with confidence. However, they aren’t quite as strong or stable as natural teeth. Certain foods can cause discomfort, loosen your dentures, or even damage them. Being mindful of what you eat helps protect your appliance and maintain your oral health.
Here are 4 foods you should avoid — or approach with caution — when wearing dentures.
1. Sticky or Chewy Foods
Caramel, taffy, gummy candies, and sticky granola bars can cling to dentures and pull them out of place. These foods may also leave behind residue that’s difficult to clean, increasing the risk of irritation or infection.
Sticky foods can strain the adhesive holding your dentures in place, especially if you wear full dentures. If you crave something sweet, choose softer, less adhesive treats and remove your dentures for thorough cleaning afterward.
2. Hard or Crunchy Foods
Nuts, hard candies, popcorn kernels, and ice can put excessive pressure on dentures. Biting down on very hard foods may cause cracks, chips, or fractures in the denture base or teeth.
Even crunchy foods like raw carrots or hard apples can be challenging. Instead of biting directly into them, try cutting them into smaller, manageable pieces or choosing softer alternatives.
Protecting your dentures from impact helps extend their lifespan and prevents costly repairs.
3. Tough Meats
Steak, pork chops, and other dense meats can be difficult to chew evenly with dentures. These foods may cause the dentures to shift or create sore spots along the gums.
If you enjoy meat, opt for tender cuts, ground meat, shredded chicken, or slow-cooked options that are easier to chew. Cutting food into smaller bites and chewing slowly on both sides of your mouth can also improve stability.
4. Extremely Hot Foods and Drinks
Dentures can sometimes reduce your ability to sense temperature accurately. Very hot soups, coffee, or tea may cause burns without you realizing how hot they are.
Additionally, excessive heat can warp certain denture materials over time. Allow hot foods and beverages to cool slightly before consuming them.
Adjusting your diet doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor or nutrition. With dentures, it’s all about choosing foods that are easier to chew and less likely to cause damage. Cutting food into smaller pieces, chewing evenly, and maintaining good denture hygiene will help you stay comfortable and confident. If your dentures frequently shift or cause discomfort while eating, schedule a dental visit to ensure they fit properly.
