Are you dealing with dull, consistent discomfort that’s making it difficult to sleep soundly? Maybe you’re struggling with a sharp, stabbing pain that’s making eating extremely difficult. Fortunately, there are a few home remedies for severe toothaches that will help alleviate your discomfort until you visit your emergency dentist. To learn what they are, read on!

1. Use a Cold Compress

Not only will a cold compress help alleviate inflammation, but it will also provide a temporary numbing sensation. So, if you have a cold compress, use it for 10-15 minutes at a time! You can also use a towel-wrapped ice pack.

Tip: Exercise caution when sipping on ice-cold water. Although it has the potential to alleviate swelling, it can also lead to additional discomfort if you’re already struggling with dental sensitivity.

2. Rinse with Warm Saltwater

Did you know that saltwater is a natural disinfectant? It’s true! Not only that, but it can help reduce inflammation, and, in turn, pain stemming from your tooth. If you want to try this remedy, simply dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in warm water and gently rinse with the mixture.

3. Keep Your Head Elevated While You Sleep

Have you ever noticed that your toothache gets worse at night? It’s likely because blood rushes to your head when you’re lying flat. That’s why patients are encouraged to prop themselves up on a few pillows or sleep upright in a chair. It’s also important not to eat anything sugary before bed, like ice cream.

4. Avoid Hot/Cold Foods and Drinks

As mentioned above, ice-cold drinks can exacerbate your symptoms. So can hot drinks and cold foods! So, do your best to eat room-temperature foods that are more bland, like oatmeal, cottage cheese, bananas, and plain yogurt.

5. Chew on a Garlic Clove

Surprised? The truth is that garlic can combat bacteria and be a pain reliever. You can get the effects by making it into a paste, putting some garlic oil on a cotton ball, or chewing on a fresh clove – whatever is most convenient for you!

6. Take OTC Pain Medication

Lastly, if nothing else seems to be working, you can take OTC pain medication. Just make sure to follow the directions on the label; you never want to take more than the recommended amount.

Although none of these home remedies can be used in lieu of professional dental care, they can certainly help alleviate discomfort, soreness, and sensitivity until your appointment!
