This early on, damage\ncan be reversed with professional dental cleaning and proper care at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 2: Periodontitis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the second stage of gum disease, irreversible damage\nstarts to occur to the supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place.\nPockets can form, trapping food particles and more plaque. Proper dental\ntreatment includes scaling, or removing plaque and tartar buildup at and below\nthe gum line, and root planing, or smoothing the teeth\u2019s roots to prevent\nfuture buildup. These routine periodontal cleanings can help keep periodontitis\nunder control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 3: Advanced Periodontitis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, your teeth can shift or move because the fibers and\nsupporting bone have been destroyed. In some cases, even aggressive treatment\ncan\u2019t save the natural teeth, and they have to be removed. In fact, advanced periodontitis\nis the leading cause of tooth loss for patients over age 35.
